ANADOLU KAVAĞI

Anadolu Kavaği is a fishing village on the Asian side of the Bosphorus.

It's the last village before the Bosphorus opens up into the Black Sea.

It's less than an hour from central Istanbul.

The ruins of Yoros Castle loom high above the waterside restaurants.

Like Key West in the States Anadolu Kavaği lived off of wrecking in its early days.

Fishing also is big, but the present-day village makes most of its living off of day trippers on the last stop of the popular Bosphorus cruises.

So tourism in king.

Istanbul is still a magical place.

But it is losing many of its old wooden houses to fires, neglect and over development.

Thankfully, some architects, designers and history buffs are buying and restoring the great Ottoman-style homes.

THE TURKISH FLAG IS OMNIPRESENT IN ISTANBUL

We visited not long after the attempted coup.

It seemed like huge white on red Turkish flags were mandatory adornments on half the buildings -- public and private.

The crescent and star are taken from the Ottoman flag.

BOSPHORUS BRIDGE

The Bosphorus, which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, is a very busy working waterway.

Ferries cross it constantly to connect European side cities and Asian side towns.

A cruise up the Bosphorus will pass large tankers and other working ships.

This one is passing under a modern bridge.

BEYAZIT TOWER

ISTANBUL, TURKEY



Beyazıt Tower, also named Seraskier Tower, from the name of the Ottoman ministry of War, is an 85 m (279 ft) tall fire-watch tower located in the courtyard of Istanbul University campus (formerly Ottoman Ministry of War.)

Located on Beyazit Square (known as the Forum Tauri in the Roman period), it is on top of one of the "seven hills" which Constantine the Great had built the city, following the model of Rome.

It is currently equipped with lighting system to indicate weather conditions in different colors.

Red color means snow, blue - nice and clear weather, green - rain and yellow - fog.
