ON THE HIGH LINE -- BOOK REVIEW -- PART 5

EXPLORING AMERICA'S
MOST ORIGINAL URBAN PARK

Chapter Three: 16th -- 20th Street

The "Death Avenue," Amphitheater explains the view of 10th Avenue, which had so many train-pedestrian deaths in the early 20th century, that it was known as Death Avenue:

"The bleachers of the High Line's amphitheater provide a priceless 'only in New York' moment, for where else would a theater be constructed with a grand view of traffic in motion?"

"Tourists and natives alike perch here day and night with their cups of coffee to enjoy the endless rumble of trucks, taxis, cars, limos, bicycles and motorized scooters as they make their way down the road formerly known as 'Death Avenue.'"

"Traffic has always been an event in New York, and this stadium offers a fine -- and uniquely stress-free -- way to experience and indeed appreciate the unending vehicular flow as an art for unto itself."

High Line book review continues tomorrow, October 23
