KENT STATE: FOUR DEAD IN OHIO

AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY VIVIDLY TOLD BY MASTER ARTIST/JOURNALIST/STORYTELLER JOHN “DERF” BACKDERF

“Kent State: Four Dead In Ohio,” by northeast Ohio artist John “Derf” Backderf is essential reading for every American and 100% relevant to the times of Black Lives Matter, protest and Trump.

Derf shares the stories of the four students who were killed by the National Guard on Kent’s campus on May 4, 1970, during a protest.

I never thought I’d be much into graphic novels, much less buy one in hardback. But it works and is worth every penny.

I have a close connection to Kent State. It’s where I met my soulmate Heidi, nearly 40 years ago.

She lived in Prentice and her dorm room overlooked the parking lot where four innocent students met their deaths because of right wing idiots such as Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes and moronic gung-ho Ohio National Guard leaders.

I was a journalism student and for four years of my life spent more time at Taylor Hall than my dorm on the other side of campus.

Taylor is at the top of the hill overlooking the commons, where heavily armed/poorly trained guardsman raced towards, taking fire on unarmed students.

It also now is home to the Kent State May 4 Visitor’s Center, housed exactly where the Daily Kent Stater newsroom was located for years, including when I was a staff member.

Derf spent three years studying the archives at Kent State University and other repositories. He interviewed witnesses and victims of the shooting.

Far from a long comic strip about a tragic even in American History, “Kent State: Four Dead In Ohio” is a fine piece of journalism.

I thought I knew everything about the shootings (which took place when I was five and my family lived about 25 miles from Kent.)

I learned all kinds of behind the scenes plus front and center facts from Derf’s book, including the intriguing case of Terry Norman, a narc/gun nut/unstable spy who later served time as a convicted felon for crimes unrelated to the events at Kent.

I laughed at the insider Kent things (live music at J.B.s, townies, black squirrels anyone?) sprinkled through the book.

And even though I was well-aware of the outcome, I wept when the students – so brought to life by Derf – met their bloody deaths at the hands of ruthless National Guard, that never should have had high powered military loaded weapons on a largely peaceful college campus.

I have communicated with Derf – who also penned an amazing graphic novel on his high school classmate Jeffrey Dahmer – to share my praise for his gripping, crucial and essential piece of vivid journalism.

BYE MAFIA DON

Let the healing begin…

..about 9 a.m. Monday.

Till then, I'm gonna gloat like hell over the deplorables that gave us a 4-year nightmare of degradation.

White Supremacists, bigots, elites, bullies, affordable care act destroyers, haters of people with disabilities, enemies of democracy:

Screw off and go to hell.

WHY I DON’T PULL PUNCHES ON SOCIAL MEDIA

I AM PROUD TO SHARE MY ADVOCACY FOR EQUITY, MY SHAMING OF BIGOTRY, WITH ALL – REGARDLESS OF THE CONSEQUENCES

"Republicans buy shoes too.”  That was Michael Jordan’s famous reported response to why he didn’t use his immense influence, talent, stardom and wealth to speak up for progressive causes or speaking out against policies and politicians that continue to hurt marginalized people.

MJ, famous for years for being apolitical, has a right to do whatever he wants to. Years after retiring, he broke his silence and condemned the deaths of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement.  If had his bank account, I would not have waited so long to be fearless in calling out discrimination both overt and subtle -- damn the celebrity, fame, adulation and shoe contracts.

Actually, I’m pretty sure Jordan’s sofa change is worth much more than my accumulated net worth from 55 years on this planet.  And I take discrimination and inequity to task almost daily…on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, this blog and in nationally-published essays.

Most often, I take on policy and design that continues to enslave people with disabilities in poverty, underemployment, unemployment, substandard housing and worse.

I also have no trouble calling out local, state and federal officials for any act that is corrupt, hateful, arrogant, abusive or unethical.

More than a dozen friends have quietly, privately told me to knock it off. That I have probably offended a potential client or killed the chance for repeat business from a client who loves bullying, bigoted politicians and “leaders.”

They tell me I can ill-afford to rail against paving over park land, sweetheart deals to billionaires, bigoted/biased policies, demagoguery and other things infecting government on all levels.

Acquaintances have pleaded with me to take down posts that outline why Donald Trump is a white supremacist, a liar, a crook, a cheat, a person who mocks people with disabilities and plots to take away what little access to health care and social safety net that remains for them.

Maybe I’m a fool. But I’m a fool who sleeps soundly. A fool that will leave this world with his good name.

I am trained as a journalist. My DNA screams to me to shine a light on evil, corruption, hatred, racism, sexism, homophobia.

People are willing to think whatever they want, vote for whatever authoritarian, destroying of democracy that appeals to them.

But if they cannot work with me because I believe in social justice, in affordable housing, in a vast safety net, in equity in planning, transit, parks, infrastructure and mobility for all – then that’s their problem.

My work arrangements are like mini marriages. We have each other’s back. We can confide in each other. Trust, honesty and decency are treasured.

It is our duty, as Americans, to fight for equality. To shame elected and appointed officials who spew hatred and damage lives.

I honor that duty with most every word that comes out of my mouth, with virtually each word I type on my keyboard.

If that renders all my experience, talent, creativity and collaborative spirit void, then so be it.

Guess I’ll never have the wealth of Air Jordan. Guess we’ll have to get by with one small house, flying coach and investing wisely.

I cannot, will not, compromise my values for the dollar.

TOMAS TRUMPS...TRUMP

HOW DO YOU LOOK A MEXICAN FRIEND IN THE EYE WHEN THE LEADER OF YOUR NATION HAS BRANDED HIS PEOPLE AS THE SCUM OF THE EARTH?

I am talking to my friend Tomas.

One of 10 children, he left his Zapotec village for Oaxaca City at age 15.

He worked 7 days per week.

Drove a cab.

Took a year of nightly English classes and became a tri-lingual tour guide.

His oldest son is an architect, his oldest daughter a lawyer.

The next youngest is a school teacher and the baby of the family is finishing a masters and is contemplating doctoral work in human rights.

And I am faced with telling him that though our household didn't vote for him, I have blood family and neighbors that elected a president that has branded Mexicans rapists, thieves, murderers and lazy.

Tomas still works 7 days a week and feels guilty if only works half a day on Sunday.
He is industrious, warm, good humored and positive.

And I have to somehow explain that we have more than 3 years under an idiot despot that rules by fear, anger, ignorance and worse.

45 had everything handed to him by daddy.

And if he really had grown the family fortune, it is through deceit, treachery, litigation, strategic bankruptcy, government subsidy and even other kind of underhanded dealing known to man.

I don't know about you, but I'd choose, in a heartbeat, to have Tomas running our nation.

While the Russian puppet, stole the election, mentally unfit, halfwit, treasonous Trump rots in jail.

150,000 readers

As of today, more than 150,000 unique visitors have read my blog.

I try to share great photos, stories, human rights advocacy, urban design ideas and more.

This photo is from Hierve el Agua in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Because everyone in the state and city of Oaxaca treated me so warmly, I was crushed to tell them that I live in a once-proud nation that used to stand for democracy, humanity, liberty, freedom, fair play, diversity and good character.

I told them, proudly in my ever-growing Spanish vocabulary, that I do not just oppose -- I loathe the SOB that conspired with a foreign threat to illegitimately gain the presidency.

I shared how with that ill-begotten power, Dictator #45 is destroying as much of the real America as possible before he is forced to resign, is impeached, or (hopefully, rightfully) is imprisoned for the rest of his natural life.

I usually save my most severe politics for my Twitter and Facebook accounts.

But the great culture, heritage, history and humanity that I felt during my better part of two weeks in Mexico inspired me to tell each one of my 150,000 readers how much I intend to resist the corrupt Trump-Pence-Ryan-GOP-Right Wing totalitarian government that serves only the richest, whitest of privileged people.

Some thoughts, about just how disgusting and dangerous POTUS 45 and his sycophants (psychopaths?, sociopaths?) are to a nation founded on diversity and freedom of thought and expression.

POIGNANT MESSAGE ON THE BACKSTREETS OF BEYOGLU, ISTANBUL

GOT $ FOR WARS, CAN'T FEED THE POOR

Paused to take a picture of a bakery opening to sell special loaves for Ramazan, when I saw this 60s-looking street art.

Wish I could share the back story, but I don't know it.

Certainly, in times of Trump and other leaders who corrupted elections to deny democracy while edging toward dictatorship, a poignant piece of art.

Ironic that it's on a street, named for a general who fought both for the Ottoman Empire and in the war of Turkish Independence.

Wonder if the artist did that on purpose, or if was just a blank wall big enough to host his political message in the form of eye-catching street art.

MICHELLE OBAMA TALKS ABOUT GOALS, AVOIDS TRUMP

DURING KEYNOTE CONVERSATION AT AIA 2017 ORLANDO

Courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel:

Former First Lady Michelle Obama made no mention of the man who replaced her husband as president during her first post-White House speaking engagement Thursday in Orlando and appeared to rule out seeking office in the future.

“It’s all well and good until you start running, and then the knives come out,” she said. “Politics is tough, and it’s hard on a family … I wouldn’t ask my children to do this again because, when you run for higher office, it’s not just you, it’s your whole family.”

“Plus,” she added, “there’s just so much more we can do outside of the office, because we won’t have the burden of political baggage.”

Obama participated in a 45-minute Q&A during the American Institute of Architects’ annual conference at the Orange County Convention Center on Thursday. She spoke about adjusting to life after the White House and discussed her goals for the future and causes she hopes to support.

“One issue that I am excited about continuing to work on is … to help young girls get an education around the world,” she said, citing the Let Girls Learn initiative she launched as first lady. Obama also stressed the need to combat violence against women and improve their access to healthcare.
