THE ORIGINAL PANTRY CAFE PART 3

NEVER CLOSED, NEVER WITHOUT A CUSTOMER

The biscuits are also fab and they go great with the mountain of home fried potatoes that come as a side order.

For meats, the crispy bacon is outstanding, but nothing matches the unique and savory Portuguese sausage.

There are dinner time menu items included cooked to order steaks, salads, country fried steak, daily specials and dreamy desserts.

But we’re a fan of breakfast at any time.

THE ORIGINAL PANTRY CAFE PART 2

NEVER CLOSED, NEVER WITHOUT A CUSTOMER

For all these years, it’s been a cash only operation at the Pantry – no credit cards allowed.

The cashier sits in a little windowed room at the front.

The waiters have been there forever and they start you off with that incomparable Pantry cup of coffee.

The stuff’s so popular, you can order a gallon of it to go for less than eight bucks.

Breakfast is served around the clock and we live for the pancakes – browned just to the point of burning, so they are perfect.

We’re big eaters, but we can never finish the stack of three big, fluffy pancakes.

THE ORIGINAL PANTRY CAFE PART 1

NEVER CLOSED, NEVER WITHOUT A CUSTOMER

For nearly a century, the Original Pantry Café has fed Los Angeles locals and visitors with huge plates of food at a reasonable price.

When it opened in 1924, downtown was booming.

The Pantry survived both the Depression and the era when Downtown LA became rather scary and desolate.

We remember going to it when sat among great empty blocks, with only the fabled Hotel Fig – aka the Hotel Figueroa, holding court year it.

Now he voids have been filled with the Staples Center and dozens of other buildings as Downtown LA is popular again with dozens of loft conversions and hip little restaurants.

Through it all, the Pantry has been open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The door doesn’t have a key.

As The Pantry's current owner, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan likes to boast, "We never close. We're never without a customer."
